the following simple experiment can be carried out by anyone with a normal school education knowing basic geometry...circles....tangents...diameter....radius....distances....all pretty basic stuff.....no need for PHDs just plain common sense....

NOW FOR A LITTLE BASIC MATH...

IMAGINE A CIRCLE WITH A CIRCUMFERENCE OF 25000 approx miles (the earth at the equator)......

Now imagine a TANGENT, a line which touched the surface of the circle and then proceeds in a straight line for 4000 miles....4000 miles is approximately the radius of the earth, 8000 being the diameter...

Then if you dropped a line at right angles down to meet the circles surface at the diameter point, then a very neat square with all sides being 4000 miles would be formed..

So we can say on a perfect circle that the curvature of the circle at 4000 miles out into space would be a drop of 4000 miles....

At 3000 miles the curvature drop would be......1270 miles

At 2000 miles the curvature drop would be........504 miles

At 1000 miles the curvature drop would be........126 miles

These distances can be measured with a simple ruler.

Now for small distances of say...1 mile..2 miles...4 miles etc a simple formula can be used which is as follows

The distance in miles squared times 8 = the curvature drop in INCHES..

LET'S TRY SOME...

6 miles the drop?...6x6=36x8=

288 inches or 24 feet or 8 yards or 7 metres approx

Ok let's just do 2 miles...2x2=4x8=

32 inches just under a metre

4 miles...4x4=16x8=128 inches=10 feet=

3 metres approx

1 mile.....1x1=1x8=8inches= 25cmsapprox
